Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Review

Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 is dark, twisted, and full of surprises. James Marsden is a brilliant addition to the ensemble cast.

Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Review

As much as I love Your Friends & Neighbors Season 1, I was curious, perhaps even a little worried, about where the story could possibly go from there without becoming repetitive. That said, after binge-watching all of Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2, I can safely say the writers knew exactly what they were doing – and now I cannot wait for the already confirmed Season 3.

Bringing in James Marsden was a brilliant choice for many different reasons. It is rare to find an actor who can balance this level of charisma with a creeping sense of dread so effortlessly. Marsden has always been an actor who gives 110% to every frame he’s in, but here, he steals every single scene he is in. And opposite Jon Hamm? That says a lot. James Marsden is completely and utterly charming throughout this season, even though it is glaringly obvious that he is shady and keeping secrets.

Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Review

What I loved so much about the first season of Your Friends & Neighbors was the fact that it was filled with twist after twist. The same can be said for season 2. And they are ridiculously unpredictable. Usually, with these types of dramas and dark comedies, you can start to figure out where things are going by the middle of the season. Not here.

I can honestly say that nothing about this season was predictable for me. Just when I thought I understood the direction we were heading, the writers pulled the rug out from under me. It’s an exhilarating, frustrating, and brilliant journey that ends in a massive cliffhanger that will have viewers begging for Season 3 to release already.

Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Review

One of the best things about this season is Coop’s arc. We see him transition from a desperate man trying to stay afloat to someone who actively drags others down with him – even if he isn’t meaning to. He spends a significant amount of time debating his own ethics, trying to convince himself (and us) that he’s doing this for the right reasons. Yet, in a beautifully dark bit of irony, the more he tries to fix his situation, the worse things get for him and those around him.

On the other side of the coin, we have Mel (Amanda Peet), who provided the emotional backbone of the season for me. Her arc felt incredibly relatable. Mel is navigating a sea of transition that feels hauntingly familiar.

Between dealing with teenage kids who haven’t the slightest clue what to do with their futures and navigating the lingering, heavy grief of a dissolved marriage, her plate is overflowing, and it is breaking her down. Watching her struggle to find her own identity and keep her temper in check had me rooting for her to figure it all out.

Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Review

While Your Friends & Neighbors is undeniably funny at times, it is the twisted dark drama that keeps me coming back. It’s a show about the monsters we live next door to, and sometimes, the monsters we become when our bank accounts hit zero.

Season 2 elevates the characters, the drama, and the intensity of Season 2. There is so much that I want to say, but for fear of spoiling things, I will just say hold on tight because you are in for a wild ride.
